The House Beside the Water

I told him to send them.

The packet arrived the next morning, several dozen pages held together with a blue clip.

I spread them across the kitchen table and read slowly, tracing dates and account numbers with my finger.

At first, the records looked like ordinary business paperwork: invoices, expense forms, and brief messages about scheduling and authorization.

Then I found a conversation between Olivia and someone in the finance office.

The subject line read: Residence costs, second quarter.

Olivia’s message was polite and practical.

The apartment lease had been renewed, and she wanted to know whether the payment should be coded

to the executive support account as before.

The reply asked whether Mr. Moretti had requested the change.

Olivia answered that she would handle it and that he did not need to be bothered with the details.

I read the exchange again.

Then I found another message about a watch purchased several months earlier.
