She opened one drawer, then another.
“What are you looking for?”
“Last Christmas.”
“What about it?”
“Allison brought some paperwork over.”
I felt the muscles in my back tighten.
“What paperwork?”
“She said Geoffrey needed emergency contact information for his business insurance. Something about next of kin because they were applying for a commercial lease renewal.”
“You signed something?”
“No. I filled out a page.”
“What page?”
“Addresses. Phone numbers. Birth dates.”
My mouth went dry.
Patricia stopped searching.
“Robert, I didn’t sign anything legal.”
“I’m not saying you did.”
She turned toward me.
“But I gave her information.”
“We don’t know if that matters.”
“I gave her our information.”
There was guilt in her voice now.
I walked over and put my hand on her shoulder.
“Pat.”
“She was my daughter-in-law. Why would I think—”
“Patricia.”
She looked at me.
“We are not going to start blaming ourselves for trusting our son’s wife.”
