I stared at her.
“What?”
“She told him we had talked to a real estate attorney.”
“We never did.”
“I know.”
“Why would she tell him that?”
Patricia looked shaken.
“He said she told him we wanted to move to a retirement community.”
I stood.
“Did he believe her?”
“He said it made sense.”
I paced once across the kitchen.
“We have never said anything about moving.”
“I know.”
“And he never asked us?”
Patricia looked down.
“No.”

But Geoffrey had apparently accepted an entire story about our future without ever asking whether it was true.

“Could Allison have convinced Geoffrey the transfer was legitimate?” I asked.
“Possibly.”
“How?”
“If she told him you were reorganizing assets, planning an estate transfer, helping with collateral—there are many explanations.”
