“Before the power of attorney was filed?”

“Yes.”

“Then how did she notarize it?”

“She may not have.”

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

“Explain.”

“Her notary stamp was reported missing shortly before she resigned.”

I looked at Patricia.

She understood immediately.

“Was it stolen?”

“Lydia told the state she believed it had been lost during an office relocation.”

“Did she mention Allison?”

“No.”

“But Allison worked there.”

“Yes.”

Martin paused.

“There’s more.”

Of course there was.

“Lydia remembers you.”

I frowned.

“I’ve never met her.”

“She says you attended the firm’s client appreciation luncheon two years ago.”

I searched my memory.

Allison had invited us to an open-house event at her office.

Patricia had gone shopping with her sister that afternoon, so I went alone.

There had been catered sandwiches, financial planners handing out cards, attorneys giving short presentations.

I had signed a guest book.
