My husband silently handed me the folder.
It contained medical test results.
They were in Emily’s name.
And they carried the hospital’s official stamp.
“Margaret, three months ago, Emily became sick at school. She was extremely dizzy and had unusual bleeding. She was frightened, so she asked me to take her to the doctor.”
I stared at my daughter.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Emily burst into tears.
“Because Grandma was in the hospital, Mommy! You were crying every night. I didn’t want you to think you were going to lose me too.”
My eyes filled with tears.
Robert continued.
“The doctors examined her. They discovered she has a blood-clotting disorder. Because of it, the normal changes her body is going through have caused unusually prolonged bleeding. She’s developed severe anemia.”
I looked at my daughter’s pale face.
Suddenly, everything began making sense.
Her exhaustion.
Her dizziness.
Her absence from school.
The bloodstains.
“But why did you keep this from me?” I whispered.
Emily lowered her head.
“Because I heard you say you couldn’t survive another piece of bad news.”
I froze.
