On My Wedding Morning, My Mother Called and Told Me to Run—Then I Discovered What My Fiancé Had Planned for Me

“You know Derek loves you very much. Whatever happened this morning, I’m sure it can all be resolved.”

I looked at her.

“Mrs. Collins, half an hour ago you stood on that stage and told everyone I wasn’t good enough for your son.”

Her smile faltered.

“Oh, sweetheart, I was upset. You mustn’t take everything so seriously.”

“You said I wasn’t from a respectable family.”

“I didn’t mean it that way.”

“You also praised Sienna for giving you a grandchild while suggesting I had nothing worth offering.”

Patricia’s face flushed.

Several guests were now listening closely.

“Amelia, surely we can discuss this privately.”

“We could have discussed your treatment of me privately at any point during the last three years,” I answered. “But you never thought my feelings mattered.”

She lowered her eyes.

I turned toward Derek.

“You wanted to impress Harrington Equity Partners tonight.”
