On My Wedding Morning, My Mother Called and Told Me to Run—Then I Discovered What My Fiancé Had Planned for Me

The sound of my fiancé’s name sent an unexpected chill through me.

“Derek? What does he have to do with this?”

There was a brief silence.

Then my father took the phone.

“Amelia, listen carefully. We have evidence that Derek is bringing several men to your apartment. They aren’t there to take you to your wedding. We’ve already contacted the authorities, but I need you somewhere safe before anything else happens.”

I couldn’t understand what he was saying.

Derek Collins was my fiancé.

The man who kissed my forehead every morning before leaving for work.

The man who had promised me a lifetime together.

He could be impatient and occasionally insensitive, but dangerous?

That seemed impossible.

Then I heard footsteps outside my apartment.

Several pairs of footsteps.

A man’s voice muttered something.

Another answered.

And then I heard Derek.

“Make sure she doesn’t leave before she signs. We can’t afford another delay.”
