On my wedding day, my husband sl@mmed my face into our wedding cake. I realized “I leave now… or I may never leave alive”. What I did next left the entire room “in dead silence…”…007

Luca stood in the center of the parquet floor, his arms hanging limp at his sides, his chest heaving inside his tuxedo.

The handsome, arrogant smile that had graced the society pages of the *Chicago Tribune* had vanished completely, replaced by the wet, gray, sniveling terror of a cornered embezzler whose vault door has just been blown off its hinges by a naval artillery shell:

“Jessi…” Luca wheezed, taking one agonizing, shuffling step toward the podium, reaching out with both trembling hands:

“Jessi, darling… listen to me! That… that was private marital tension! Every couple has arguments! You know how stressed I’ve been with the merger in Switzerland! I love you! You’re my wife! We took vows twelve minutes ago!”

I leaned forward over the podium.

The blood from my nose dripped onto the silver cake knife in my right hand:

*tink.*

“Under Clause Fourteen-B of our signed prenuptial agreement, Luca,” I spoke softly, every syllable dropping like an eighty-pound iron dead-weight onto his coffin:

“A single verified act of domestic violence committed within seventy-two hours of the ceremony… voids the marital estate ab initio.”

“The marriage was never consummated.”

“The legal contract was severed the second my nose struck that wooden platform.”

I pointed the Christofle knife straight at his chest:

“You didn’t marry an heiress tonight, Luca.”

“You assaulted a Master Fiduciary Auditor of the United States Navy.”

“And the company shares you spent eighteen months trying to beat out of my hands…?”

I smiled—a slow, terrifying, un-forgiving line of white bone:

“…were never commercial private equity.”

CHAPTER 4: THE DEED OF THE LOWER BEDROCK

*KABOOOOM.*

The heavy, four-inch-thick solid bronze double doors at the main entrance of the Drake’s Grand Ballroom did not slide open on their automated tracks.

They were cleaved off their structural brass rollers by an eighty-pound linear hydraulic tactical breaching ram deployed by an active federal direct-action assault element:

*CRASH-ROAR-SHATTER.*

A concussive shockwave of sub-zero night air, pulverized plaster dust, and tactical propellant blew through the room, extinguishing two hundred decorative candles, shattering two secondary crystal chandeliers into a blizzard of incandescent glass, and throwing three municipal aldermen flat onto their backs across the white runner:

*SCREAMS-PANTING-TERROR.*

Through the billowing clouds of pulverized white dust…

Illuminating the ballroom in forty thousand lumens of clinical, blinding white tactical halogen…

Advanced twelve operators from the **United States Marshals Service Special Operations Group (SOG)** and the **United States Navy Board of Harbor and Subterranean Surveyors**.

They wore sterile dark-charcoal Nomex drysuits, Level IV boron-carbide plate carriers, and Ops-Core ballistic helmets fitted with panoramic night-vision brackets folded onto their foreheads. Across their chests hung suppressed SIG Sauer MCX Rattlers, their weapon-mounted PEQ-15 infrared lasers cutting through the drifting dust in twelve razor-sharp needles of incandescent crimson light:

“FEDERAL INQUEST! REMAIN STATIONARY! SPREAD YOUR HANDS FLAT ON THE TABLE SURFACES! DO NOT REACH FOR BRIEFING FOLDERS OR PURSES!”

Wendy Sterling shrieked, scrambling backward on her hands and knees beneath Table Two, her pearls tearing on a mahogany chair leg and scattering across the parquet like white hail:

*patter-patter-patter.*

“ARTHUR! CALL MY BROTHER ARTHUR!” Wendy screamed, spit and snot running down her face: “HE IS THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE UNITED STATES! HE WILL HAVE YOU EXECUTED ON THIS FLOOR!”

“Your brother cannot hear you tonight, Wendy,” a voice commanded from the breach.

Walking through the pulverized plaster dust…

His hand-welted naval leather bridge boots making a clean, concussive *crunch… tack… crunch* against the shattered crystal…

Wearing his full service dress blue uniform bearing the four silver stars of the **Chief of Naval Operations**, his chest covered in ten dense rows of decorations including the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal…

Was my maternal great-uncle.
