My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

So I didn’t open it immediately.

Instead, I asked Evelyn one question.

“Is Claire involved in whatever happened to Jamie?”

Her face crumpled.

“I don’t know how much she’s done.”

My stomach turned.

“That isn’t an answer.”

She looked at me.

“I know.”

I stepped closer.

“Evelyn, my eight-month-old daughter nearly died. My brother has been accused of hurting her. My wife is missing. And somehow you’re standing here with evidence about a childhood secret involving my family.”

My voice cracked.

“So I need you to stop protecting people and tell me the truth.”

Evelyn lowered her head.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, “Claire found out about Jamie six months ago.”

I stared.

“Found out what?”

Evelyn looked at my brother.

And the expression on her face was so full of shame that I almost didn’t want to hear the answer.
