My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

Within ten minutes, he was sitting in our living room.

He didn’t ask unnecessary questions.

He just looked at my face and said, “Something’s wrong.”

I nodded.

“Very wrong.”

Jamie stayed upstairs with Sophie while I waited for further instructions.

At nine fifteen, Martin’s phone rang.

He stepped outside to answer.

A minute later, Jamie came down the stairs.

He was holding his blue backpack.

“Daniel?”

I turned.

“What is it?”

“I remembered something.”

I stood.

“About the red door?”

He nodded.

I felt my heart pounding.

“Tell me.”

He sat beside me.

“When I was little, a man took me somewhere.”

I waited.

“Mom cried when I came home.”

My throat tightened.

“Who was the man?”

Jamie stared at the floor.

“I don’t remember his name.”

“That’s okay.”

“He wore a silver watch.”

I swallowed.

“And?”

“He kept asking me what I saw.”

“What you saw where?”
