My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

Then Jamie said something that silenced us both.

“There’s blood behind her ear.”

I froze.

Claire’s hand stopped inches from Sophie’s face.

Jamie pointed toward the right side of my daughter’s head.

A thin red line ran through her soft brown hair.

Not much.

Just enough to turn my stomach.

My fingers fumbled for my phone.

As I dialed 911, Jamie carefully placed one hand beside Sophie’s shoulder, making sure she remained still.

The dispatcher answered.

“911. What’s your emergency?”

“My daughter,” I gasped. “She’s eight months old. She fell, or something happened. There’s blood. She’s not responding normally.”

“Is she breathing?”

I looked at Jamie.

He leaned close without moving Sophie’s head.

“Yes,” he said. “She’s breathing.”

I repeated his words.

The dispatcher began asking questions.

I could barely understand them.

My eyes kept returning to the object clenched in Jamie’s fist.
