My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

I had promised.

And somehow, in my own home, I had allowed him to become a stranger.

I reached for his hand.

He held mine tightly.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Jamie whispered, “There’s something else.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“About last night.”

My heart began pounding again.

“What about it?”

Jamie glanced toward the hallway.

“Claire came into Sophie’s room before I did.”

I stared at him.

“How do you know?”

“I saw her.”

“When?”

“Before I went to bed.”

I frowned.

“Claire checks on Sophie all the time.”

Jamie nodded.

“I know.”

He hesitated.

“But she was holding something black.”

I felt a cold sensation crawl across my back.

“What do you mean?”

He rubbed his hands together.

“I was getting water. I saw her standing near the crib. She put something inside.”

I tried to understand.

“Like a toy?”

“I don’t know.”
