“My three-year-old daughter burned with fever while I called my husband one hundred times, but every call went unanswered….007

“He built **Conduit Ten**.”

“The classified, electromagnetic-shielded, pressurized analog command artery running eighty feet beneath this limestone house, connecting the deep communications redoubts at Great Lakes Naval Training Center straight into the retaliatory crypts beneath the Supreme Court of the United States.”

“Inside that conduit were placed forty-eight titanium transit cylinders containing the physical, analog mechanical targeting release matrices for our nation’s strategic nuclear deterrent.”

I pointed my gold-nibbed pen straight down through the limestone parquetry:

“This house—the estate you told your business partners you bought with your corporate bonuses—sits directly atop **Valve Station Ten**.”

“The primary North-Central overland surface access hatch, hydraulic ventilation manifold, and emergency cryogenic staging terminal for Conduit Ten.”

“Seven years ago, Arthur, your family syndicate discovered that I was the sole surviving direct biological granddaughter of Arthur Mercer Senior.”

“Under Section Fourteen-B of the **1944 Mercer Sovereign Lineal Charter**…”

Marcus Cooper turned the execution block of the warrant:

“…the chief certifying surveyor retains an un-divided, un-alienable fifty-one percent legal equity in the property in perpetuity.”

“Transferable exclusively unto his direct biological lineal descendants who hold active master chancery commissions.”

“Arthur Vance couldn’t buy Conduit Ten.

He couldn’t seize it through eminent domain.”

“So your family deployed you.”

“You were instructed to court me.

You were instructed to marry me.

You were instructed to father a child.”

“Because under the corporate charters of **The Valkyrie Trust**—the offshore shadow entity your uncle created in Liechtenstein forty years ago…”

Cooper leaned forward, his voice dropping forty decibels of clinical, sub-zero river gravel:

“…if a male non-lineal spouse fathered a female heir who died before her fourth birthday without surviving siblings, the statutory reversion of the underlying defense bedrock defaulted into the paternal conservatorship of the surviving father!”

The room dropped forty degrees in half a second.

Arthur’s mouth fell open, dry clicks rattling in his throat:

*k-k-k.*

“No…”

Arthur stammered, backing away until his spine hit the limestone column:

“No!

That’s a lie!

I loved Chloe!

I would never hurt my own daughter!”

“You didn’t give her the bacteria, Arthur,” Julian Reese revealed, his voice shaking with pure, volcanic disgust:

“Your mother, Margaret, did.”

Arthur froze.

“Margaret visited the nursery eight days ago while Valerie was at the Pentagon,” Julian continued:

“She brought Chloe that vintage ceramic doll from Geneva.”

“The doll whose porcelain base was coated with a laboratory strain of *Neisseria meningitidis* synthesized by Dr.

Aris Vance’s private clinic in Zurich.”

“You knew the timetable, Arthur.”

“You booked the flights to Saint Lucia forty-eight hours before Chloe ever spiked her first fever.”

“You turned your phone off because you knew that if you were inside this country when she died, the military medical examiners would have drawn your blood for sovereign DNA matching!”

“You needed to be on foreign soil.”

“You needed your alibi.”

“And you needed your daughter dead before sunrise this morning—the statutory seventy-year reversion deadline when your grandfather’s sovereign trust reverted into Valerie’s unencumbered fee-simple possession under civilian chancery law!”
