*CRASH-ROAR-SHATTER.*
A concussive shockwave of freezing November air, pulverized heart-pine framing, and high-pressure tactical exhaust blew through the kitchen, blowing the curtains off their rods, shattering the glass transoms over the sink into a blizzard of incandescent shards, and throwing Tyler flat onto his back across the floorboards:
*SCREAMS-PANTING-TERROR.*
Through the billowing white clouds of tactical propellant…
Illuminating the entire kitchen in forty thousand lumens of clinical, blinding white tactical halogen…
Advanced twelve operators in sterile dark-charcoal Nomex drysuits, Level IV boron-carbide plate carriers, and Ops-Core ballistic helmets fitted with panoramic night-vision brackets folded onto their foreheads. Across their chests hung suppressed SIG Sauer MCX Rattlers, their weapon-mounted PEQ-15 infrared lasers cutting through the drifting smoke in twelve razor-sharp needles of incandescent crimson light:
“FEDERAL INQUEST! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW! DOWN ON YOUR KNEES! SPREAD YOUR HANDS FLAT OVER YOUR HEAD!”
CHAPTER 2: THE DISARMAMENT OF THE KINGDOM
Chief Michael Harris did not drop his sidearm.
His brain, conditioned by ten years of un-questioned small-town impunity, simply refused to compute that men in charcoal body armor were leveling automatic weapons at his chest in his own kitchen:
“STAND DOWN!” Michael screamed, waving his Glock toward the doorway: “I AM THE POLICE CHIEF OF THIS TOWNSHIP! YOU ARE TRESPASSING ON A CRIME SCENE!”
*CLACK.*
Two two-hundred-and-twenty-pound SOG tactical operators moved across the linoleum in fluid, synchronized, terrifying mechanical velocity:
The lead operator did not fire a shot.
His gloved left hand swept forward with four hundred pounds of linear kinetic leverage, slapping the slide of Michael’s Glock out of battery while his right forearm drove an open-palm strike straight into Michael’s sternum:
*CRACK.*
The police chief’s breath exploded out of his lungs in a wet, ragged gasp: *whuff.*
His Glock flew from his paralyzed fingers, spinning across the breakfast table, knocking over my mother’s ceramic sugar bowl, and clattering onto the floorboards:
*clatter-smash.*
Before Michael could draw breath to scream, the second operator caught him by his leather duty belt, spun his two-hundred-and-forty-pound frame one hundred and eighty degrees against the edge of the blue-tile breakfast table, and drove his face down onto the Formica with three hundred pounds of downward torque:
*SLAM.*
His cheek struck the tile, his gold chief’s badge popping off his uniform shirt and skidding across the floor, his nose flattening against the ceramic:
*SNAP-SNAP.*
