My Stepdaughter’s Mother Seated Me in the Last Row and Said “Real Mothers Sit Up Front,” Then the Bride Stopped Mid-Aisle

And she smiled.

The reception was at an old barn venue out in the country. White lights strung across the rafters.

Long wooden tables with mason jars full of wildflowers.

I sat at the head table. Hannah had insisted.

There was a little card in front of my plate. Somebody had scribbled out whatever had been

printed there before and written over it by hand, in black pen.

“Mom.”

I recognized the handwriting. It was Hannah’s.

I sat there with that card in my hands while people came up to the table one after another to hug me. Mrs. Patterson. Carol. Joanne, who hugged me so hard my back cracked and then whispered in my ear, “I’ve been waiting twenty years to see that woman sit in the second row.”
