My son won the lottery, kicked me out of the house, and said: “You’re worthless! Go live in a nursing home.” I wandered aimlessly to clear my mind. When I sat down on a bench, a homeless man walked up to me, smiled, and said: “You look just like my late wife…”

The breakthrough came 6 weeks after we’d started working with Sarah. She burst into the cafe during my afternoon shift, her face flushed with excitement.

“We’ve got him,” she announced without preamble. “The judge granted our motion to freeze Richard’s assets pending investigation of fraud claims.”

I nearly dropped the coffee pot I was holding. “What does that mean exactly?”

“It means Richard can’t sell, transfer, or spend any money from accounts connected to Morrison Holdings until the court determines legitimate ownership. His bank accounts are frozen. His credit cards are suspended, and he can’t access any funds beyond what’s in his personal checking account.”

The magnitude of this hit me slowly. Richard, who just weeks ago had been gloating about his lottery winnings and throwing me out for being worthless, was now trapped in the same kind of financial limbo he’d imposed on his father 15 years earlier.
