He looked down.
“And the house?”
“Speak with your mortgage lender.”
“The cars?”
“Arrange transportation within your budget.”
He swallowed.
“What about the children?”
My expression softened.
“Lily and Noah are not responsible for any of this. I’m working with Susan on a separate educational arrangement for them.”
Relief appeared on his face.
Then I added, “But you won’t control those funds.”
He nodded slowly.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Finally, Peter stood.
“I think we’ve covered enough for today.”
He turned toward me.
“Mrs. Carter, I appreciate you providing the full documentation.”
“Thank you.”
Then he looked at Brandon.
“We need to review the situation carefully before taking further steps.”
My son followed him toward the door.
But before leaving, he stopped.
“Mom?”
I turned.
He looked exhausted.
“Are you really going to let us lose the life we’ve built?”
I thought about his question.
