My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

“I didn’t sell your home. I sold a residence owned by Cedarline Capital, an entity in which neither of you has any legal interest.”

Her voice changed. The sweetness vanished. “You bitter old woman.”

Howard raised an eyebrow.

I leaned back in my chair. “Good morning to you too, Kristen.”

“You think this is funny? You think you can

humiliate us over one little argument?”

“One little argument,” I repeated.

“You embarrassed me in front of my friends,” Trevor snapped.

I touched my split lip with my tongue. It had swollen overnight. “I embarrassed you?”

“You came into my house acting like you owned the place.”

“I did.”

Another silence. This one was different. Not shocked. Cornered.

Trevor spoke more carefully. “Mom, listen. Whatever this is, undo it. We’ll talk.”

“There is nothing to talk about.”

“You can’t kick us out.”

“I’m not kicking you out.”
