My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

“I talked to everyone.”

A chill moved through me. Everyone.

“Gloria,” Kristen continued, “since I know you’re listening, you should check your email.”

My phone buzzed in my pocket. One new message from an address I didn’t recognize. Subject line: Raymond Sutter Trust Documents.

My hand stopped halfway into my coat.

Kristen’s voice turned almost sweet. “You really should have told Trevor what his
father left him.”

The world narrowed. The gate. My son’s white face. The scent of rosemary in the cold air. My husband’s name in a stranger’s email.

“Mom?” Trevor whispered, confused and terrified. “What is she talking about?”

I opened the email. There was one attachment, a scanned document. At the top were words I hadn’t seen in seventeen years.

The Raymond Sutter Irrevocable Family Trust.

Beneath it was a signature page. Mine. Raymond’s. And a third signature I didn’t recognize.
