My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

“Kessler Private Group?”

“A related office.”

“That sounds intentionally vague.”

“It is.”

I stayed in my car. “You’re trespassing.”

“We’re outside your gate.”

“You’re threatening me.”

“We’re introducing ourselves.”

Behind me, a white pickup turned
into the drive. Security. Two retired officers Howard had used before. I recognized one, a broad man named Ortega. Voss glanced at them and smiled slightly.

“I see you’ve made arrangements.”

“I like to know who’s visiting.”

“So do we.”

Ortega walked up to my car and I lowered the window. “You okay, Mrs. Sutter?”

“I’m fine.”

He looked at Voss. “You invited?”

“No,” I said.

Ortega rested one hand near his belt. Not on a weapon. Near enough to be understood. Voss didn’t move.

“I only need five minutes,”

he said.

“You have two.”

He nodded, as if that amused him. “Your son owes money.”

“My son is thirty years old.”
