“Boss.”
Ethan stood.
“What?”
“We found Camila.”
I jumped up.
“Where?”
The security man looked grim.
“St.
Gabriel’s Church.”
“The wedding venue?”
“Yes.”
“Alive?”
He hesitated.
“Apparently.”
Ethan grabbed his jacket.
I shifted Sophie into her carrier.
“You’re staying here.”
“No.”
“Rachel.”
“No.
She’s my sister.”
“There may be armed men inside.”
“Then you’d better bring more armed men.”
His mouth almost twitched.
“This isn’t funny.”
“I’m not joking.”
For three seconds, we stared at each other.
Then he sighed.
“Stay behind me.”
St.
Gabriel’s looked beautiful from outside.
White stone.
Tall windows.
Flowers framing the entrance.
Inside, it looked like someone had abandoned a wedding halfway through setting it up.
Champagne glasses stood untouched.
Candles flickered.
White roses lined the aisle.
There were no guests.
Only Camila.
She stood near the altar in her wedding dress.
Alone.
I ran toward her.
“Camila!”
Ethan grabbed my arm.
“Wait.”
My sister looked up.
Her mascara had streaked down her face.
“Rachel.”
I ignored Ethan and ran.
Camila threw her arms around me.
We held each other harder than we had in twenty years.
“I’m sorry,” she sobbed.
“What did you do?”
“I thought I could expose them.”
“Who?”
She looked over my shoulder.
At Ethan.
Then past him.
“No.”
Her face drained of color.
Ethan spun around.
The church doors closed.
