Belle straightened.
Grandma turned toward me.
“Carolyn, come here, sweetheart.”
I stepped forward.
Grandma took both my hands and faced the crowd.
“This is my granddaughter,” she said clearly. “The one who’s actually been there.”
Belle forced a smile.
“Grandma, we’re all family.”
“I’m not finished,” Grandma said.
Not loud, just final.
She pulled a worn leather notebook from her cardigan.
She didn’t read it like a lecture.
She chose a few lines and let them hit.
“When I was scared, Carolyn drove me to appointments. When I couldn’t sleep, Carolyn stayed on the phone. When I needed help at home, Carolyn showed up.”
She closed the notebook and looked straight at my mother.
“And there were people who didn’t.”
My mother’s face drained.
Grandma lifted her chin.
“Gordon,” she said. “Tell them what you told me.”
A man stepped forward, calm in the way only proof can make you.
