I checked my purse. My coat pockets. The kitchen counter. The bowl of loose change by the microwave.
« No idea. »
« Daniel, have you seen the lake house keys? » I called toward the living room.
He didn’t look up from his laptop.
« No idea. You probably moved them and forgot. »
Something in the flatness of his voice caught me, but I let it go. I figured I’d dropped them somewhere near the house last time or left them sitting on the kitchen counter out there. I grabbed my bag and told him I’d be back before dinner.
« What time are you leaving again? » he asked.
Music was pounding through the trees.
« Now. Why? »
« Just asking. »
I drove the two hours out of the city with the radio low, thinking about the flowerbeds and whether the tulips had come in yet.
Then I turned onto the gravel road and heard the bass before I saw the house.
