My older brother drove up to help me move, but he arrived at my martial arts gym ten minutes early and watched a 210-pound black belt deliberately choke me unconscious after I tapped….007

The entire gym froze.

Nobody breathed.

The timers on the wall—counting down the remaining five minutes and twelve seconds of the round—clicked in rhythmic, digital silence:

*05:11…

05:10…

05:09…*

“You like holding chokes after the tap, Derek?”

Cole whispered.

His voice had no theatrical volume.

It wasn’t the chest-thumping roar of an MMA fighter playing to a camera.

It was fifty decibels of flat, sub-zero river water.

It was the voice of a man who had stood in unmapped valleys in Kunar and Helmand, watching men bleed out while he checked his radio frequencies.

Cole tightened the torque on Derek’s shoulder by a quarter of an inch.

*POP.*

The sound of cartilage protesting inside the joint echoed off the concrete walls like a dry twig snapping under a hunter’s boot.

Derek let out a shrill, suffocated shriek through his broken teeth:

“TAP!

TAP!

TAP!

BRO, TAP!

AHHH, TAP!”

His right hand was slapping Cole’s thigh so hard his palm left red welts.

Cole didn’t release him.

He held the lock for one… two… three… four seconds.

The exact four seconds Derek had kept his arm wrapped around my windpipe while I suffocated in the dark.

Then, with an unhurried, dismissive shove, Cole stepped back and let Derek collapse face-first onto the mat:

*SLAM.*

The two-hundred-and-ten-pound black belt hit the floor like an unstitched sack of wet concrete, clutching his left shoulder to his chest, gasping for air, rolling in his own spit.

Cole stood over him.

His breathing had not accelerated by a single cycle.

His pulse was resting at fifty-two beats per minute.

He reached down to his wrist, not to adjust a watch, but to wipe a microscopic speck of Derek’s saliva from the back of his forearm with his gray athletic shorts.

“Next,” Cole said softly.
