My older brother drove up to help me move, but he arrived at my martial arts gym ten minutes early and watched a 210-pound black belt deliberately choke me unconscious after I tapped….007

The heavy cabin door slid back on its tracks:

CLANG.

Standing on the rain-slicked marble plaza, surrounded by twenty operators from the United States Marshals Service Special Operations Group (SOG) and the United States Supreme Court Police Tactical Response Team, was Chief Judge Eleanor Mercer.

Eighty-two years old.

The Presiding Judge of the Second Circuit.

Admiral David Mercer’s older sister.

Our late grandfather’s surviving sibling.

Our great-aunt.

Cole’s namesake.

She stood five feet eleven inches tall in the howling winter gale, wearing a dark-navy wool judicial overcoat over an un-ironed civilian three-piece suit, her silver hair pulled back into an unyielding architectural bun, her gloved right hand resting over an antique, gold-headed walking cane carved in the likeness of an artillery surveyor’s transit.

Beside her stood Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Bennett, Chief Trial Counsel for the Military District of Washington, wearing his dress green uniform, holding an unsealed, four-hundred-page leather litigation brief bound with crimson silk ribbon:

`THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES`
`SPECIAL ADMIRALTY CHANCERY // DOCKET: 2026-CR-00914-TREASON`
`THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA & THE MERCER SOVEREIGN ESTATE`
`v.

CHIEF JUSTICE ARTHUR M.

STERLING-VANCE,`
`HAROLD ANTHONY VANCE, DEREK ARTHUR VANCE, ET AL.`
`CHARGES: CAPITAL HIGH TREASON UNDER ARTICLE THREE, SECTION THREE,`
`PREMEDITATED SABOTAGE OF CLASSIFIED STRATEGIC NUCLEAR DEFENSE ASSETS,`
`AGGRAVATED ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE OF A SOVEREIGN BENEFICIARY (18 U.S.C. § 1114),`
`AND THE SEDITIOUS USURPATION OF SOVEREIGN ADMIRALTY ESCROWS.`
`EXTRAORDINARY CAPIAS BENCH WARRANT: IMMEDIATE ARMED ATTACHMENT.`

Cole stepped down the aluminum air-stair.

His hand-welted leather field boots made a clean, concussive *tack… tack… tack* against the wet marble.

Barnaby walked beside his knee, his dark coat glistening with sleet, his amber eyes locked onto the massive bronze central portals.

Beside Cole walked Major General Michael Grant and Vice Admiral David Mercer, their authority cutting through the freezing mist in synchronized, unblinking discipline.

I walked on Cole’s left flank, the white cloth belt Derek had thrown into the dirt now held firmly in my hands.

Behind us walked United States Attorney Marcus Cooper.

Judge Eleanor Mercer did not offer an emotional family greeting.

She turned her slate-gray eyes onto Cole, looked down at Arthur Mercer’s tweed jacket, down at the unpolished bronze transit pin, down at the gold oak leaves gleaming on his collar, down at the four-hundred-page vellum brief in his arms, and then down to the four-inch titanium key resting in his gloved right hand:

“Is the chain of custody intact, Cole?” the Judge asked.

Her voice had no volume; it was fifty decibels of pure, un-forgiving Maine iron:

“Did Derek surrender the Virginia registers without legal defect?”

“Derek Vance and Vance Miller are in federal transport chains at the holding facility in Miramar, Aunt Eleanor,” Cole answered:

“The gym confrontation was dismantled four hours ago.”

“The communications logs have been decrypted by naval intelligence.”

“The sixty billion dollars in diverted defense reserves has been frozen in Zurich.”

“The acoustic listening transceiver recovered from the locker room and the broken arm Derek suffered on the mats have been logged as physical evidence of high treason.”

“And the master vellum deed to Conduit Ten is pristine.”

Judge Mercer unsealed the execution block of the capias warrant:

“Chief Justice Arthur Vance has locked the monolithic, four-inch-thick bronze blast doors of the West Conference Room,” the Judge stated:

“He has severed all external civilian telecommunications lines with the Department of Justice.”

“Arthur Vance’s private appellate lawyers entered the basement garage eleven minutes ago, carrying the forged quitclaim deed.”

“They believe that Sarah is sitting in a cold apartment, silenced by a black belt, and that Harold Vance holds the northern spur.”

“They believe that the sixty billion dollars from Zurich will clear before the morning opening of the financial exchanges.”

“And Arthur is preparing to sign the Sovereign Modernization Mandamus in nine minutes, permanently deeding Conduit Ten to his private consortium in Vaduz.”
