My neighbor picked every last piece of fruit from my garden. But instead of marching over to her house and starting another argument, I decided on a different kind of response….007

“You need to stop this.”

Saved.

Then another.

“I said I’m sorry.”

Saved.

Then:

“You’re making me look like a criminal.”

Saved.

I didn’t respond.

Because I had learned something important.

People who are accustomed to controlling conversations often become angry when you stop participating in them.

The HOA meeting was held the following Saturday.

Almost everyone attended.

Monica arrived twenty minutes late.

She walked into the community room wearing a bright blue dress.

She looked around.

Then saw me.

Her expression hardened.

She sat across from me.

The HOA president cleared his throat.

“Let’s keep this factual.”

He looked at me.

“Mrs.

Carter, please explain what occurred.”

I did.

No exaggeration.

No insults.

No emotional performance.

Just facts.

I showed the photographs.

Then the security footage.

The room became completely silent.

Monica watched herself climbing over my fence.

When the video ended, she immediately stood.

“She was already planning to take revenge on me!”

Someone asked:

“Who is she?”

“Claire.”

“Why would she?”

“Because she hates me.”

I looked at Monica.

“I barely knew you before this.”

She glared at me.

“That isn’t true.”

“Then tell them what I did before you stole the fruit.”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The HOA president looked at her.

“Did Mrs.

Carter threaten you?”

“No.”

“Did she give you permission to enter her property?”

“No.”

“Did she tell you to leave?”

“Yes.”

“And did you return later?”

Monica’s silence answered.

He nodded.

“Thank you.”

Then he looked at the room.

“We need to discuss the property damage and repeated trespassing.”

Monica suddenly began crying.
