My mother laughed at Grandpa’s funeral lunch and said, “Even your grandfather knew which one of you was the failure.”

Not the relatives sitting nearby.

I quietly thanked Marty, washed my coffee cup, and left.

That evening, I sat alone in my rented kitchen staring at the brass key.

One detail kept bothering me.

My mother had mentioned Unit 12.

But Grandpa’s handwriting clearly said 41.

And he had written the number so carefully that the pen had nearly torn through the paper.

Why?

Before sunrise the next morning, I drove north.

Three hours later, I arrived at Headwater Storage.

An older woman came out of the office when she noticed my car.

I showed her the key.

Her expression softened.

“Oh. You’re Walter’s granddaughter.”

I nodded.

“He said you’d come.”

My heart skipped.

“He did?”

She smiled.

“He visited the big heated unit every month. Said someone special would come for it.”

She pointed toward the far end of the property.

I walked between the storage buildings until I reached Unit 41.
