My mother laughed at Grandpa’s funeral lunch and said, “Even your grandfather knew which one of you was the failure.”

But he also promised to explain what he described as an unfair inheritance dispute.

I didn’t plan to watch.

I had two hundred buns to bake.

And for once, my family’s drama wasn’t going to determine how I spent my day.
The broadcast began late Friday afternoon.

I was three hours away in Park Rapids, measuring dough at my workbench.

Later, Marty told me what happened.

My mother had arranged flowers around Grandpa’s photograph.

Several church friends were seated in the living room.

Derek spoke into his phone about keeping the family house together.

A document waited nearby.

The same release they’d asked me to sign.

Shortly before the deadline, Marty arrived.

My mother invited him to speak in front of everyone.

She apparently expected him to announce that I’d changed my mind.

Instead, he explained that the conditions had not been fulfilled.

The property would be sold according to Grandpa’s instructions.
