My husband’s sister moved her bachelorette to an adults-only pool resort because she was certain I’d be too embarrassed to show up. She didn’t expect him to drive me there — or to take out his phone when he looked at the cabana and worked out whose card had paid for all of it.

There are about nine of us at that hour and the median age is sixty-one and not one person in that building has ever looked at me.

I told everyone you’d never get in the water.

She said that with her hand still on my sleeve, in front of everybody, and she was right in the way that mattered to her — I had not gotten in a pool in fifteen years and she knew exactly why, because I had told her myself on a dock.

What she got wrong was smaller and it took me the whole drive home to work out.

She thought the thing keeping me out of the water was my body.

It was never my body. It was the twenty-two phones.
