My husband’s huge family always assumed I would be the one paying for dinner, and when they once again started ordering the most expensive things on the menu, I decided to teach them a lesson they would never forget…..007

“Aaron Monroe Sterling-Vance and Lucas Arthur Vance,” Marcus Cooper stated, every syllable dropping like an eighty-pound iron anvil into thirty fathoms of sub-zero water:

“Eighty years ago, in nineteen-forty-four, Sarah’s grandfather—**Chief Master Surveyor Arthur Mercer Senior**—was commissioned by the Department of the Navy under Title 50 War Powers to bore forty miles of subterranean pre-Cambrian crystalline schist beneath North America.”

“He built **Conduit Ten**.”

“The classified, electromagnetic-shielded, pressurized analog command artery running eighty feet beneath this continent, connecting the deep naval command redoubts at Great Lakes and Norfolk straight into the nuclear retaliatory continuity crypts beneath the Supreme Court of the United States!”

“Inside that conduit were placed forty-eight titanium transit cylinders containing the physical, analog mechanical targeting release matrices for our nation’s strategic nuclear deterrent.”

“No digital hack could touch them.”

“No foreign satellite could override them.”

“They are physical, un-hackable, eternal.”

Cooper pointed his gold Montblanc pen straight down through the restaurant floorboards into the riverbed:

“And this historic waterfront pavilion—built upon the foundations of the 1904 Potomac Naval Foundry—sits directly atop **Valve Station Ten // Georgetown Subterranean Aperture**!”

“The primary surface ventilation manifold, cryogenic emergency staging terminal, and master pneumatic override hatch for forty miles of classified defense bedrock running eighty feet beneath our boots!”

“Under Section Fourteen-B of the **1944 Mercer Sovereign Lineal Charter**:”

“The underlying fee-simple title to forty miles of defense bedrock belongs exclusively to Arthur Mercer’s direct biological descendants who hold active master chancery commissions.”

“Unto Colonel Sarah Eleanor Mercer.”

“And through her… unto the Republic in perpetuity!”

CHAPTER 4: THE AUDIT ON THE SEAFOOD TOWER

Aaron Vance gasped, his back pressing so hard against the glass window that the double-paned acrylic groaned beneath his weight:

*CREEEAK.*

“Conduit Ten…?”

Aaron whimpered, his face contorting into an apocalyptic mask of sheer terror:

“No… you… you were an agricultural risk analyst!

My brother Arthur said the Mercer trust was broke sixty years ago!”

“Your brother Arthur Vance lied to you, Aaron,” Admiral David Mercer roared:

“Former **Chief Justice Arthur Sterling-Vance**—your biological brother, the architect of **The Valkyrie Trust** in Vaduz, Liechtenstein—has spent forty years constructing an offshore syndicate to seize Conduit Ten!”

“He could not buy it.

He could not condemn it through civilian courts without triggering an automatic military inquest.”

“So your family deployed Lucas!”

“Lucas was instructed to court Sarah three years ago.”

“Lucas was instructed to position his family over the surface easements of Valve Station Ten.”

“And you, Aaron…?”

The Admiral pointed his white-gloved hand toward the silver seafood towers:

“…you were instructed to bring twenty-four people to this restaurant tonight!”

“Because under the archaic provisions of Clause Fourteen of the 1944 Charter:”

“If an active commissioned lineal custodian is subjected to systematic commercial debt extraction exceeding one hundred thousand dollars within a single fiscal quarter, and allows her private factoring liquidity to be consumed by civilian collateral relatives without asserting an official chancery audit before midnight on the statutory anniversary…”

“…the underlying sixty-billion-dollar sovereign defense title defaults automatically to the occupying family as statutory conservators for the court!”

“You didn’t order thirty thousand dollars of lobster and premier cru wine because you were hungry, Aaron!”

Cooper bared his teeth in a razor-thin, cold line of white bone:

“You staged an adverse liquidity drain!”

“You spent three years using weekend dinners to exhaust Sarah’s liquid accounts!”

“You believed that tonight, by forcing her to absorb this twenty-eight-thousand-dollar tab, you would trigger a personal liquidity default on her military security bond!”

“And while you were bragging about your family’s walking credit card…”

Cooper checked his chronometer:

`20:14:22 EST.`

“…your brother’s private equity attorneys were sitting in an executive suite at the Willard Hotel in Washington, waiting for the clock to hit midnight tonight to register a sixty-billion-dollar conveyance deed transferring forty miles of nuclear defense bedrock directly to Switzerland!”

Lucas Vance fell to his knees on the parquetry, his hands clawing at his silk tie, his face dripping with cold sweat:

“Sarah… please!

Look at me!

I am your husband!

Three years!

We shared a bed!

You can’t let them arrest my family over a restaurant bill!”

I walked across the floorboards.

My hand-welted leather field boots crushed a dropped langoustine claw into the floor with a clean, concussive *CRUNCH*:

*CRUNCH.*
