The cards are in a drawer in my kitchen. I am not sentimental about them and I am not framing them.
I keep them for one reason, which is that in eleven or twelve years, when Sunny is nineteen or twenty, she is going to want to know exactly what she did in that hall.
And I am not going to describe it to her.
I am going to give her a card that says my dad does everything for us, in her father’s handwriting, and let her hold it.
And then I am going to tell her that at seven years old she asked one honest question in front of four hundred people because something did not add up, and that a seventeen-year-old and a fifteen-year-old followed her, and that her mother went back to work in September.
She has been told she is the reason her family changed.
She is not. She is the reason it changed that Thursday.
It was going to change. I had the envelope with the arithmetic on it in a drawer since 2023 and I was two years and about nine hundred dollars away from being able to do it myself.
What my daughter did was save me two years.
