Her card said: My dad does everything for us.
That is the sentence a man wrote out for a seven-year-old to say into a microphone at an assembly about parenting.
What happened in the next four minutes.
Ruth Ojo came to the front of the stage.
She did not make a speech and I will be grateful to that woman for the rest of my life.
She said, “Thank you, Sunny,” and she put her hand out and Sunny gave her the card, and she read it.
And then Torin took the microphone.
Seventeen years old, in front of four hundred people including about sixty of his classmates, which I want you to hold on to, because there is no version of seventeen where that is easy.
He said two sentences.
“He hasn’t lived with us since October.”
And: “My mum does all of it.”
Then he gave the microphone back and walked off the front of that stage and out of the side door, and Vela walked after him, and Vela handed Ruth Ojo her own card on the way past without stopping.
Ruth Ojo said, into the microphone, “I think we’ll leave it there. Thank you all for coming.”
And four hundred people got up.
Nobody clapped. That is the detail everybody asks about afterward. Nobody clapped and nobody quite talked either, for about the first thirty seconds, and then the noise came all at once the way it does.
I got my children out through the fire door by the music room because I have been in that building for twelve years and I know where everything is, and Warner was still on that stage.
Now the part that is documents.
The nomination.
On the Monday after — the nineteenth of May — Ruth Ojo rang me and asked me to come in, and she put a printout on the desk between us.
Brightwater takes nominations through a form on its website. Anybody can submit one. There is a free-text box.
The nomination for Warner Ashcombe was submitted on the third of March at 2:41 in the afternoon, from a work email address belonging to Merrit Vance.
Merrit Vance is the office manager at Ashcombe Facilities Group. She has worked for my husband since 2019.
The narrative is four hundred and six words long.
It contains six specific factual claims about his involvement with our children.
Four of them are false and can be shown to be false in about nine minutes, and I did it in Ruth Ojo’s office, out loud, with a school calendar.
It says he “coaches” — he has never coached anything. It says he does the school run three mornings a week. It names two teachers he has never met.
