When Adrian saw the portfolio, he stopped.
“Leave that.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“The estate folder. You don’t need to carry financial documents into a hotel.”
I stared at him.
“Why do you care?”
“I don’t.”
“You clearly do.”
“Caroline, you’re emotional. Things get lost.”
“They’re my documents.”
“I know.”
Again.
Fear.
Not about losing me.
About the folder.
I put it into the suitcase.
Adrian stepped into the doorway.
“If you walk out, don’t expect everything to be the same when you return.”
I looked at the man I had loved for five years.
“That’s the first reassuring thing you’ve said tonight.”
Vanessa stood beside the kitchen island when I left.
She looked devastated.
Maybe she was.
I didn’t care.
My phone buzzed before I reached the elevator.
Vanessa.
I know you hate me, but I love him.
I typed:
Then keep him. But don’t confuse getting what you wanted with winning.
Then I blocked her.
