My husband sta//bbed me twice just to defend his mistress over a tiny scratch. I woke up three days later in the ICU, but he had no idea that as I lay ble//eding out on our rug, I had secretly tapped ‘Record’ on my smartwatch…007

CHAPTER 5: THE ULTRASOUND ON THE TRAY

Julian Vance began to shake with that violent, uncontrollable palsy that takes hold of a drowning man when the final air pocket collapses beneath the surface.

His eyes darted from the red-lit display to the brass die on the tray, and then… they landed on the glossy black-and-white thermal printout of the ultrasound Caleb had placed there fifteen minutes ago.

The two tiny, translucent silhouettes.

The eight-week gestational sacs.

“The… the babies…” Julian sobbed, his fingernails digging into his palms until blood dripped onto his white cuffs:

“Nora… if you were an operative… if this was an audit… why did you get pregnant?! Why did you carry my children?!”

A cold, razor-thin smile sliced across my face.

A smile that held zero tears, zero grief, zero debts, and zero graves.

“Pick up the ultrasound, Julian,” I said softly.

Julian’s hand trembled as he reached for the thermal paper:

*crinkle.*

“Look at the patient identification number in the upper right-hand corner, Julian,” Caleb commanded.

Julian’s eyes scanned the microscopic digital text:

`PATIENT ID: MERCER-REED-001`
`EXAMINATION DATE: OCTOBER 12, 2026`
`GESTATIONAL AGE: 8 WEEKS, 2 DAYS`
`FETAL HEART TONES: HR1: 164 BPM // HR2: 158 BPM`
`STATUS: ACTIVE // VIABLE // INTRAUTERINE TWIN PREGNANCY`

“October twelfth…” Julian whispered, his brow furrowing in utter, uncomprehending shock:

“The… the stabbing was October fourteenth. You… you lost them in the emergency room. Dr. Reed told me… he told me both heartbeats were gone!”

“Both heartbeats *are* gone from this hospital, Julian,” Caleb Reed revealed, every word dropping like an iron depth-charge into fifty fathoms of dark water:

“Because my sister was never pregnant with your children.”

Julian stopped breathing.

His mouth fell open, his jaw hanging limp, his eyes bulging from their sockets:

“What… what did you say?!”

“Three weeks ago, Julian,” I said, every syllable falling like an un-appealable decree that sealed three years of domestic treason into solid rock forever:

“When I discovered that Selina Cole had returned from Zurich with the chemical paralytics provided by your mother’s private physician…”

“I had my eggs harvested and fertilized via private gestational surrogacy at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.”

“The woman carrying my twins is currently thirty-two thousand feet in the air aboard a presidential medical transport aircraft flying under the callsign **ARCHANGEL-ONE**, escorted by two squadrons of F-Twenty-Two Raptors.”

“My children carry the Mercer bloodline.”

“They carry my grandfather’s name.”

“And their biological father… is Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Vance—your late brother’s surviving son, whom your mother disowned and exiled to the naval submarine fleet fifteen years ago.”

Julian let out an un-human, glass-shattering shriek from the bottom of his lungs:

*“NOOOOOOOOOOO!”*

The thirty-six-year-old corporate titan lunged toward the bed, his manicured fingers hooked into claws aimed directly at my throat:

“YOU TREACHEROUS BITCH! YOU USED ME! YOU GAVE THE VANCE ESTATE TO THOMAS’S BLOOD! I WILL KILL YOU! I WILL TEAR YOUR STAPLES OUT WITH MY BARE HANDS!”
