*CHAPTER 3: THE THIRD PARTY AT THE ALTAR
The silence that followed the recording was not civilian quiet.
It was the terrifying, vacuum-sealed drop that occurs inside an aircraft cabin when the pressure bulkhead gives way at thirty-five thousand feet.
Julian Vance’s knees buckled.
He didn’t collapse gracefully. He hit the floorboards like an empty suit of clothes dropped from a third-story window, his palms slapping flat against the cold linoleum:
*SLAM.*
“My mother…” Julian gasped, his voice cracking into that wet, pathetic, sniveling rattle of an emperor whose kingdom had just been melted down into scrap iron before his eyes:
“You… you recorded my mother?!”
“Your mother was standing in the foyer behind the double mahogany doors the entire time, Julian,” Caleb Reed said softly.
The surgeon walked to the foot of the bed. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out an antique, four-inch-long, solid-titanium surveyor’s compass transit key, machined with fifty-six analog cryptographic notches along its lower edge:
`KEY IDENTIFIER: MERCER-VANCE-010`
`CLASSIFICATION: STRATEGIC SOVEREIGN ESCROW // TITLE 50 CONTINUITY`
`TITLE: CONDUIT TEN // THE DELAWARE VALLEY COMMAND REDOUBT`
Beside it, he set a small, circular, hand-machined piece of tarnished naval ordnance brass flat atop the rolling tray:
The master **1944 United States Navy Admiralty Foundation Die**—the physical die used by Chief Master Surveyor Arthur Mercer Senior to stamp the red wax on the original wartime sovereign deeds eighty years ago:
*CLINK.*
The heavy brass die struck the stainless steel with a dull, subterranean ring that vibrated through the frame of my bed:
Julian’s mouth worked in spastic, dry, un-coordinated clicks:
“Who… who the hell are you, Reed?! You’re a chief of trauma surgery at a civilian teaching hospital!”
“I am a Colonel in the United States Army Medical Corps, Julian,” Caleb Reed replied, his voice dropping into that deep-granite register that had governed military tribunals for eighty years:
“Chief Forensic Pathologist for the **Joint Defense Continuity Directorate**.”
“And the biological younger brother of Chief Master Surveyor Arthur Mercer’s sole surviving lineal heir.”
Caleb pointed his hand toward the bed.
Toward me.
“My name is not Nora Vance, Julian,” I said, my voice cutting through the red-lit dark with forty decibels of compressed polar diamond:
“My name is **Major Nora Eleanor Mercer-Reed**.”
“Senior Special Master of the **United States Board of Maritime and Subterranean Surveyors**.”
“And the sole, registered fee-simple custodian of Conduit Ten.”
