Nancy turned toward him.
“You told me Vanessa had already approved the application.”
I felt the room tilt.
“Why would I approve a loan that large without discussing it with my husband?”
Sean snapped, “Because you trusted me to handle the finances!”
“Trust isn’t permission to forge my name.”
Nobody spoke.
Then the doorbell rang.
Sean’s face changed.
I noticed it immediately.
He looked relieved.
Not surprised. Relieved.
He walked to the door and opened it.
His older sister, Claire, stood on the porch holding a leather folder.
“Thank you for coming,” Sean said.
He turned toward the living room.
“Claire can confirm that Vanessa signed the documents.”
Claire looked at him, then at me.
Her expression was uncertain.
“I came because you told me there had been a misunderstanding,” she said. “You said Vanessa was accusing you of something you hadn’t done.”
Sean nodded.
“Exactly. Tell them what you witnessed.”
