The Choice I Finally Made
I did speak to Ryan two days later.

We met in Linda’s living room with a family counselor present.

Ryan apologized.

But every apology came with an explanation.

He was tired.

Work was stressful.

The apartment was small.

I had not told him how uncomfortable the car was.

He thought I would speak up if I truly objected.

Finally, the counselor asked him one question.

“If your daughter were eight months pregnant and her husband made her sleep in a car, what would you call that?”

Ryan went silent.

His face slowly changed.

For the first time, he was not thinking about how the situation affected him.

He was seeing it from the outside.

“I would go get her,” he whispered.

“And what would you think of her husband?”

Ryan lowered his head.

“I’d think he was cruel.”

No one spoke.
