My husband KICKED our 18-year-old daughter out while I was out of town for work — one year later, she returned holding a newborn and said ONE SENTENCE that made me clutch my chest.

I loved Tess more than anything in my life, and I loved Terry too, and somewhere in the last two or three years whatever was between the two of them had gone bad.

He had something to say about all of it. Her clothes. Her friends. The way she laughed.

“She’s eighteen, not eight,” he would say. “Stop treating her like royalty.”

I came back on the Thursday after three days at the depot in Marrowfield, and her door was open, and the empty hangers were knocking against each other in the wardrobe.

“Where is she?”

And Terry was at the counter buttering a piece of bread without hurrying.

“I told her to go.”

My case went out of my hand.
