My husband collapsed at our wedding reception, and I was told he had di3d of a heart att3ck. Four days later, I attended his funeral.

“What kind of deal?”

“They agreed to restore my access to the family money if I came back to work for them.”

I stared at him.

“And you accepted?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are we having this conversation on a bus?”

Karl lowered his voice.

“Because I never intended to keep my promise.”

He explained that his family had transferred a substantial amount of money into an account he controlled shortly before our wedding.

Rather than return to their business, he’d moved the funds beyond their immediate reach.

Then he’d arranged for his family to believe he was dead.

I felt nauseated.

“You pretended to die so you could keep their money?”

He sighed impatiently.

“Megan, you’re missing the point.”

“Then explain it.”

“This is our chance to be free. We can disappear, travel anywhere, buy a beautiful house, and start over. Nobody will ever control us again.”
