My husband collapsed at our wedding reception, and I was told he had di3d of a heart att3ck. Four days later, I attended his funeral.

Suddenly, half the bus seemed involved.

Karl looked furious.

“Would everyone please mind their own business?”

Then he turned back to me.

“Megan, forget them. What’s done is done. We can still have an incredible life together.”

For one brief moment, I imagined it.

A beautiful house.

A comfortable bank account.

Traveling wherever we wanted.

Never worrying about money again.

Then I remembered standing beside his coffin, believing I’d lost everything.
I remembered how alone I’d felt.

And the imagined future disappeared.

The bus began slowing for another stop.

I reached for my bag.

Karl smiled.

“Good. We’ll get off here and arrange our flight.”

I stood.

“No, Karl.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“I’m not going anywhere with you.”

His expression hardened.

“Megan, don’t be ridiculous.”

“I mean it.”

“After everything I’ve done for us?”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You did this for yourself. You simply expected me to follow.”
