MY HUSBAND CHEATED WITH OUR SON’S WIFE—SO MY SON AND I GAVE THEM A PUNISHMENT THEY NEVER SAW COMING 027

Thirty years old.

Married for ninety-two days.

Still wearing his wedding ring.

For one terrible moment, I wanted to lie.

I wanted to protect him the way I had protected him when he was five and afraid of thunderstorms. I wanted to tell him everything was fine, take him home, make coffee, pretend that life had not changed.

But some lies are acts of kindness.

This would not have been one of them.

“Sit down,” I said.

“Mom—”

“Please.”

Daniel stared

at me.

Then he slowly sat on the stone bench opposite my father’s grave.

I sat beside him.

My hands were strangely calm.

I unlocked my phone.

“There are things you’re going to see,” I said. “And once you see them, you can’t unsee them.”

His expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

I handed him the phone.

The photograph was open.

Mark.

Jenna.

Outside the hotel.

His arm around her waist.

Her face tilted toward his.

Daniel stared at it.

At first, nothing happened.

No reaction.

His eyes simply moved across the screen as if his brain had refused to translate what he was seeing.

Then he frowned.

“What is this?”

“You know what it is.”

“No.”

His voice became sharper.

“No, I don’t.”

I said nothing.

He enlarged the picture.

His breathing changed.

“That’s Dad.”

“Yes.”

“And Jenna.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“Where was this?”

“The Fairfield

Inn across town.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Daniel stood so suddenly that the bench scraped behind him.
