My husband came home from a fifteen-day trip with my best friend and lied straight to my face.So I asked him one question: “Angela has HIV. Did you know?”…007

CHAPTER 3: THE VISITOR IN THE RAIN

*KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.*

The sound against the front door was not the hesitant rap of a neighbor.

It was three authoritative, rhythmic, metallic strikes—the sound of an antique, gold-headed walking cane carved in the likeness of an artillery surveyor’s transit striking solid white oak.

David’s head snapped toward the foyer, his eyes wild with terror:

“Who is that?! Did you call the police?!”

“I didn’t call the police, David,” I said, walking past him into the hallway:

“The police don’t have jurisdiction over sovereign admiralty escrows.”

I opened the front door.

Standing on the rain-slicked front porch, framed against the dark expanse of our suburban lawn where two unmarked dark-charcoal Chevy Suburbans idled with their parking lights glowing amber through the freezing drizzle…

Was **Chief Judge Eleanor Mercer**.

Eighty-two years old.

The Presiding Judge of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

My late grandfather Arthur Mercer Senior’s surviving younger sister.

My great-aunt.

My namesake.

She stood five feet eleven inches tall in the howling Carolina rain, wearing a dark-navy wool judicial overcoat over an un-ironed civilian three-piece suit, her silver hair pulled back into an unyielding architectural bun, her gloved right hand resting over her gold-headed cane.

Beside her stood **Vice Admiral David Mercer**, Chief of Naval Operations, wearing his service bridge coat bearing four solid-silver stars, and **United States Attorney Marcus Cooper**, Chief Federal Prosecutor and Special Admiralty Master, holding an unsealed, four-hundred-page leather litigation brief bound with dark-crimson silk ribbon.

And sitting between their boots on the wet porch mat, his massive golden head held high, his amber eyes scanning the interior hallway with predatory, unyielding discipline…

Was Barnaby—an eighty-pound retired naval working dog, a Belgian Malinois whose dark muzzle had tracked human scent across sixty miles of subterranean bedrock.

Judge Eleanor Mercer did not offer a warm family greeting.

She stepped across the threshold, her cane striking the floorboards with a clean, concussive *CLINK*:

*tink.*

“Good evening, Rebecca,” the Judge said.

Her voice had zero volume; it was fifty decibels of pure, un-forgiving Maine iron:

“Is the husband inside?”

“He’s in the kitchen, Aunt Eleanor,” I answered:

“Holding a bottle of water.”

“Good,” Judge Mercer said, turning her cold, flint-gray eyes toward the kitchen archway:

“David. Marcus. Thomas.”

“Bring the chains.”

CHAPTER 4: THE ANATOMY OF A DYNASTIC THEFT

David backed up until his spine slammed into the refrigerator doors:

*SLAM.*

The magnetic spice tins rattled and clattered to the floor, spilling coarse sea salt and dried rosemary across his leather loafers:

*click-clatter.*

“What… what is this?!” David shrieked, his voice climbing into that raw, serrated register that every cornered coward produces when his private schemes collide with sovereign authority: “You can’t bring armed federal officers into my house! I am a private citizen! I have constitutional rights!”

“You are not in a private house, David Collins,” United States Attorney Marcus Cooper stated, stepping into the kitchen and setting the four-hundred-page leather brief flat atop the butcher block:

*THUD.*

`THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT & THE HIGH CHANCERY OF ADMIRALTY`
`DOCKET: 2026-CR-00914-TREASON`
`THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA & THE MERCER SOVEREIGN ESTATE`
`v. CHIEF JUSTICE ARTHUR M. STERLING-VANCE,`
`JULIAN STERLING-VANCE, DAVID EDWARD COLLINS, AND ANGELA CROSS.`
`CHARGES: EIGHTY-FOUR COUNTS OF CAPITAL HIGH TREASON UNDER ARTICLE THREE,`
`PREMEDITATED FORGERY OF SOVEREIGN DEFENSE TITLE PATENTS (18 U.S.C. § 1001),`
`SABOTAGE OF CONTINUITY-OF-GOVERNMENT CRYPTOGRAPHIC REDOUBTS,`
`AND SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY TO USURP SOVEREIGN ADMIRALTY ESCROWS.`
`EXTRAORDINARY CAPIAS BENCH WARRANT: IMMEDIATE ARMED ATTACHMENT.`

David’s eyes dropped to the caption.

He saw the name: **CHIEF JUSTICE ARTHUR STERLING-VANCE**.

He saw his own name: **DAVID EDWARD COLLINS**.

He saw Angela’s full legal name: **ANGELA STERLING-CROSS**.

“Sterling…?” David gasped, his throat clicking in terror: “Angela… Angela’s name is Cross! Her maiden name was Miller!”

“Angela’s maiden name was not Miller, David,” Vice Admiral David Mercer spoke from behind our shoulders.

His voice was sixty decibels of mountain quarry explosive, reverberating through the kitchen cabinets like heavy naval artillery:

“Angela Cross is Chief Justice Arthur Sterling-Vance’s illegitimate biological daughter.”

“She was placed in Rebecca’s high school homeroom twenty-two years ago.”

“She was assigned to monitor the Mercer lineal succession after your father-in-law was killed in an industrial crane collapse that Julian Vance covered up in Norfolk.”

“And when you met Rebecca eighteen years ago at that charity dinner…”

Admiral Mercer stepped forward until his four silver stars reflected in the terrified glass of David’s eyes:

“…you weren’t a lonely young contractor who fell in love with a quiet librarian.”

“You were a debt-ridden apprentice framing carpenter whose two-hundred-thousand-dollar gambling debts to the Vance casinos in Atlantic City were purchased by Julian Vance.”

“You were paid sixty thousand dollars in nineteen-ninety-six to marry Rebecca, monitor her movements, and ensure that she never opened the cedar drafting chest her grandfather left in her mother’s attic.”

David’s knees liquefied.
