CHAPTER 5: THE AUDIT ON THE MAHOGANY PLANK
United States Attorney Marcus Cooper stepped forward, opening the four-hundred-page leather litigation brief:
*THUD.*
The heavy volume struck the mahogany banquet table, pulverizing Richard’s spilled crystal scotch glass into flat powder:
`CRIMINAL DOCKET: 2026-CR-00914-TREASON`
`THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA & THE MERCER SOVEREIGN ESTATE`
`v.
RICHARD EDWARD MITCHELL, EVELYN BEATRICE MITCHELL,`
`BRADLEY ALLEN MITCHELL, AND CHIEF JUSTICE ARTHUR M.
STERLING-VANCE.`
`CHARGES: EIGHTY-FOUR COUNTS OF CAPITAL HIGH TREASON UNDER ARTICLE THREE,`
`PREMEDITATED FELONY CHILD ABUSE & INDUCED SPINAL PARALYSIS (18 U.S.C. § 1111),`
`SABOTAGE OF CLASSIFIED CONTINUITY-OF-GOVERNMENT BEDROCK,`
`AND SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY TO USURP SOVEREIGN ADMIRALTY ESCROWS.`
`EXTRAORDINARY CAPIAS BENCH WARRANT: IMMEDIATE ARMED ATTACHMENT.`
“Richard Edward Mitchell and Evelyn Beatrice Mitchell,” Marcus Cooper stated, every syllable dropping like an eighty-pound iron anvil into thirty fathoms of sub-zero water:
“Three hours ago, under an emergency Title 50 National Security warrant executed at the Zurich clearinghouses and your private factoring accounts in Vaduz, naval forensic intelligence unsealed your private transponder logs.”
Cooper pointed his gold Montblanc pen straight at Richard’s sweating forehead:
“The Au Sable hunting lodge ravine incident fifteen years ago was not an accident.”
“We recovered the original orthopedic trauma records from the county clinic, sealed under Arthur Vance’s personal judicial protective seal!”
“You intentionally threw a three-year-old child onto granite boulders to manufacture a lifelong medical disability!”
“You used that fabricated disability to justify forty million dollars in fraudulent corporate factoring deductions through Mitchell Defense!”
“And under Section Fourteen-B of the **1944 Mercer Sovereign Lineal Charter**:”
Cooper bared his teeth in a razor-thin, cold line of white bone:
“…this entire five-million-dollar estate, your shares in Mitchell Propulsion Dynamics, your vehicle fleets, your luxury properties in Palm Beach, and sixty billion dollars in sovereign defense reserves have reverted in absolute, un-divided fee simple unto Colonel Helen Eleanor Mercer and Cadet Julian Arthur Mercer in perpetuity!”
Richard Mitchell wept into the floorboards, blood, scotch, and tears pooling around his split lower lip:
“Helen… please!
Look at me!
I am Julian’s father!
We raised him together!
You can’t let them take me to a military prison in chains!”
Julian walked over to where his father lay pinned.
He stood tall, six feet two inches of lean, combat-rebuilt Marine architecture, looking down at the man who had mocked him for eighteen years.
Julian reached into his pocket, pulled out the silver key to the motorized wheelchair he had sat in since childhood:
*SLIP.*
Julian laid the wheelchair ignition key flat across the nape of Richard Mitchell’s neck:
*TINK.*
“You told my mother this morning, Dad,” Julian whispered softly.
Every syllable fell like an un-appealable decree that sealed eighteen years of domestic cruelty into solid rock forever:
“That you dreamed of raising a boy who played football.”
“You told her that my wheelchair was her personal failure.”
Julian leaned down until his clear slate-gray eyes filled his father’s entire field of vision:
“You were right about one thing, Dad.”
“I never played football.”
“I learned to command the bedrock.”
“And tonight…”
Julian pointed toward Uncle David:
“…you can sit in the wheelchair while the marshals roll you into Fort Leavenworth.”
CLICK-CLACK.
Two SOG tactical operators stepped forward in fluid, synchronized mechanical velocity:
Their gloved hands hauled Richard Mitchell and Evelyn Mitchell to their feet by their armpits, ratcheting heavy-duty stainless-steel military transport restraints around their wrists with sharp, definitive snaps:
*SNAP.*
A second set of chains clamped around their ankles—the identical stainless-steel irons used for capital traitors at Leavenworth:
*SNAP-CLINK.*
The prisoners were marched down the grand central gallery into the freezing rain toward the armored tactical transport BearCats waiting in the driveway:
*SCREEECH.*
Behind them were marched the thirty-four terrified board members, escorted off the sovereign defense perimeter by armed military police, their half-eaten prime rib and birthday cake left abandoned on the table:
*CRASH-ROAR-PANT.*
The front doors of the Bloomfield Hills mansion closed behind them with an authoritative, airtight, pneumatic *THUD*.
The dining room returned to silence.
The only sound left was the sixty-cycle hum of the White Hawk’s turbine idling outside on the lawn, the steady breathing of Admiral Mercer beside me, and the rhythmic *tack… tack… tack* of Arthur Mercer’s chronometer watch on Julian’s wrist.
