Chapter 2: What Brandon Had Been Planning
The room did not understand yet. I barely did. But Barbara understood, because Barbara had known her son long enough to know he did not do things by halves, and she had just, catastrophically, underestimated exactly how much he loved my daughter.
Brandon walked past his mother without looking at her, past the eight little suitcases she’d sewn to humiliate a seven-year-old, and he knelt down in front of Lisa in her flower-girl dress, at the front of the church, in front of everyone.
“Lisa,” he said, loud enough for the whole room. “Your grandmother put suitcases on your mom’s dress today. She wanted everyone to see you as baggage. Something heavy. Something a person gets stuck carrying.
So I want to tell you, and I want everyone here to hear me, what I actually think.
For the last two years, I’ve been quietly doing something. I didn’t tell your mom, because I wanted it to be a surprise for today. I’ve been filing the paperwork to adopt you. Legally. Officially. To become your father on paper, the way I already am in every way that counts.
These are the papers, Lisa. They’re almost done. All that’s left is for a judge to sign, and for you to say yes.
You are not baggage. You are the reason I’m here. I didn’t fall in love with your mom and get stuck with you. I fell in love with both of you. You were never something I had to carry. You’re something I chose, on purpose, and filed legal documents to keep.
So in front of my mother, who tried to make you feel like a burden on the happiest day of your life — Lisa, will you let me be your dad? For real? Forever?”
Lisa was sobbing, the way children cry when a feeling is too enormous for their body, and she threw herself into Brandon’s arms and said yes, yes, yes, into his shoulder, while the entire church came apart.
And Barbara stood there, in the silence her own cruelty had created, and understood that the suitcases she’d sewn to shame my daughter had just become the setup for the most beautiful thing anyone in that room had ever seen.
