MY FATHER CALLED ME A FAILURE IN COURT TO STEAL MY $4.7 MILLION INHERITANCE. THEN THE JUDGE DISCOVERED I WAS A MILITARY LAWYER.

they did not by themselves establish that Nana’s wishes had been overridden.

Then he turned to the factual allegations about isolation.

“The evidence presented does not support the petitioners’ assertion that Ms. Parker controlled facility access or arranged for locks to be changed to exclude family members.”

I felt my pulse in my throat.

Judge Morrison continued.

“The court also notes substantial discrepancies between the petitioners’ descriptions of Ms. Parker’s background and the documentary evidence provided.”

My father stared straight ahead.

“The respondent’s profession does not determine the validity of the will,” the judge said. “However, inaccurate characterizations of her history cannot substitute for evidence concerning the decedent’s capacity or intent.”

I looked down.

That was the distinction I’d wanted him to make.

I didn’t need the judge to declare me a good daughter.

I didn’t need him to admire my career.

I needed him to evaluate Nana’s decision based on evidence rather than my father’s opinion of me.
