I knew the difference between an accusation and a fact.
I knew that being confident didn’t make a witness truthful.
None of that prepared me for seeing my own parents describe me as a calculating opportunist.
They had taken every insult they’d ever directed at me and placed it into a formal document.
I read the paragraph alleging that I was unstable.
I read the paragraph alleging that Nana had become dependent on me.
Then I reached the claim that I had deliberately prevented other family members from visiting her.
I stopped.
That was not an opinion.
That was a factual allegation.
And it was false.
Nana’s facility controlled the building’s access procedures.
Management had changed the locks as part of a security update.

I hadn’t arranged it.
I hadn’t possessed the authority to do it.
The facility also maintained visitor records.
