My dying wife asked me to find my first love as her final wish — when I learned why, my knees nearly gave out…..007

PART 7 — THE DAY EVERYTHING CHANGED
Daniel called Anna.

Within an hour, she arrived.

We sat together around the kitchen table.

Three people connected by a secret that had lasted nearly forty years.

Anna looked at the photograph.

Then she closed her eyes.

“That day,” she whispered.

“What happened?”

Anna took a deep breath.

“You and I had planned to leave together.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“You were going to come back for me.”

I remembered.

Or at least I thought I remembered.

I had always believed Anna rejected me.

But now pieces of memory were returning.

The hospital.

The letter.

Carol.

Anna.

I suddenly remembered waiting outside that hospital.

Waiting for someone.

“Why were we at the hospital?”

Anna looked at me.

“Because I had just given birth.”

My heart stopped.

“The twins.”

She nodded.

“You came to see me.”

I covered my mouth.

Fragments returned.

A nurse.

A hallway.

Anna crying.

A tiny hand wrapped around my finger.

Then Carol appeared.

She told me Anna didn’t want me.

She told me Anna had chosen someone else.

She told me to leave.

But those memories were incomplete.

I looked at Anna.

“Why did I believe her?”

“Because you were young.”

“That’s not enough.”

“No.”

Anna’s eyes filled with tears.

“She showed you something.”

“What?”

“A letter.”

I stared at her.

“The forged letter?”

“Yes.”

“But why did I never remember seeing it?”

“Because Carol made sure you left before you could speak to me.”

I shook my head.

“What did she tell me?”

Anna whispered:

“She told you that if you stayed, I would take your children away.”

My heart sank.

“She threatened me?”

“She told you that I had already decided to raise them without you.”

“But that wasn’t true.”

“No.”

“Why didn’t I fight?”

Anna looked at me.

“Because she told you that I had begged her to convince you to leave.”

I closed my eyes.

The lie had been carefully constructed.

One lie supporting another.

One person manipulating two young people until they believed they had rejected each other.

And then time did the rest.

I spent decades thinking Anna had left me.

Anna spent decades believing I had abandoned her.

Carol became my wife.

The twins were separated.

And everyone suffered.

But there was still one mystery.

“Why did Carol finally tell me?”

Anna looked at me.

“Because she knew she was running out of time.”

I nodded.

Then Daniel spoke.

“She didn’t only want you to find Anna.”

We looked at him.

“She wanted you to find us.”

I stared at him.

“Us?”

“Me. Anna. Emily.”

He pulled another envelope from his pocket.

“There were instructions.”

“For what?”

He opened it.

Inside was a list.

Three names.

Three addresses.

And one final sentence:

“When they are all together, tell him the truth about the money.”

I looked at Anna.

“What money?”

She didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“Carol left us something.”

“How much?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Enough to change everything.”
