My Daughter Sent Me to Pick Up Her Wedding Cake Then the Baker Said Another “Laura Mitchell” Had Ordered Her Not to Give It to Me

“That’s what this was?” I said to David. “The phone calls on the porch? The Saturdays at the hardware store?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me last night?”

“Because Ryan asked me not to tell anyone.” David’s voice was quiet. “Not even you. He said it was his story to tell. When he was ready.”

“You watched me think you were having an affair.”

“I know.”

“You could have told me something. Anything. You could have said, Laura, I’m helping Ryan with something private, and I promised not to talk about it.”

“I didn’t know what I could say without betraying him.”

I looked at my husband for a long moment.

“You found a way to protect everyone,” I said. “Except your wife.”

David didn’t have an answer for that.

Then I remembered the bakery.

“Why were you there with her?” I said. “At the bakery.”
