My daughter introduced me to her new girlfriend — when she shook my hand, I noticed the tattoo I’d spent 18 years searching for.

Tell Claire you ran because you couldn’t raise her.”

Rachel struggled to stand.

Claire supported her.

“I ran because Michael discovered your theft,” Rachel said.

“After he passed away, you blamed him and threatened Claire.”

“You have no proof.”

Rachel pointed at the flash drive.

“His ledger.

Your transfers.

Your voice messages.”

David lunged.

I closed my hand around the drive and stepped behind Margaret.

David struck the wheelchair, sending it into the car door.

A security guard grabbed his arm.

“Let me go!”

Two investigators came through the entrance.

“David Ellis?”

Margaret raised her recorded phone.

“He threatened Emily, attempted to remove Rachel without authority, and tried to take evidence.”

David stared at me as the investigators placed him in restraints.

“You think Rachel came back because she loves you?” he shouted.

“She came back because she needs someone to pay for her care.”

Rachel’s fingers tightened around mine.

“No,” she said.

“I came back because she is my sister.”

David’s face twisted as they led him toward the doors.

“You’ll regret choosing her over your husband.”

I looked at him for the last time.

“I chose the truth over a man I never knew.”

The doors closed behind him.

Claire pressed her forehead against Rachel’s.

“I have dreamed about your face my whole life.”

Rachel began to cry.

“I counted every birthday.”

Claire wiped her tears.

“Then we start with twenty-five.”

Rachel looked at Emily, then back at Claire.

“There is one more truth you deserve to hear.”

Claire’s smile disappeared.

Rachel asked us to take her back to her room.

Claire sat on one side of her bed, and I sat on the other.

Emily remained near the door.

“What did the tattoo mean?” Claire asked.

Rachel traced the crooked triangle on her own wrist.

“One star was for Anna.

One was for me.

The third was for the family I hoped to have.”

She touched Claire’s wrist.

“When you were little, you drew stars on yourself because you wanted to match me.

Ruth had this tiny tattoo made for you after you turned eighteen.”

Claire blinked.

“Ruth told me I’d had it forever.”

“She promised not to tell you until you found someone from my family.”

“Why?”

“Because David watched her house.

If he knew she had told you about me, she feared he would move you again.”

Claire lowered her head.

“Did you know Emily and I were together?”

“No.”

Rachel looked at Emily.

“Are you David’s biological daughter?”

Emily nodded slowly.

Rachel reached for her hand.

“Claire is Michael Cole’s daughter.

You are not related by bl00d.”

Emily released a breath and sat beside Claire.

“Thank you for saying that clearly.”

A knock sounded at the door.

June Parker entered with a cardboard box.

“Ruth left this with me,” she said.

“She wanted Claire to have it if Rachel was ever found.”

Claire opened the box.

Inside were birthday cards, school photographs, and a pair of tiny red shoes.

Each card had been signed by Rachel but never mailed.

“You remembered every year,” Claire whispered.

“Every day,” Rachel said.

Claire pressed the cards against her chest and cried.

Rachel pulled her close, and Emily wrapped both arms around them.

I turned away, but Rachel caught my hand.

“Don’t leave.”

“I should give you time.”

“You have given me eighteen years.

Sit down.”

I sat.
