MY BOYFRIEND IS A MARINE, AND THREE DAYS BEFORE

I knelt down to Ollie’s eye level.

“You’d really do that for me?”

He nodded so hard his hair flopped.

“Logan made me promise,” he said. “He said a Carter man always keeps his word. Even the little ones.”

I ran upstairs and put on the blue dress with shaking hands of my own.

But on the way out, Ollie caught my sleeve, and his face turned serious in a way a thirteen-year-old’s face should never have to.

“Before we go,” he said, “there’s something Logan told me to do tonight. At exactly the right moment. And I’m not allowed to tell you what it is until it happens.” He glanced down at the phone gripped in his small fist. “So can you just trust me? No matter how weird tonight gets?”

“I trust you, Ollie,” I said.

I had no idea what I was agreeing to.

In the car, he checked that phone every ninety seconds, like a soldier watching a clock.
